L’équipe COSMO du laboratoire IBISC accueille Kamila BARYLSKA, chercheuse à la Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Pologne) au cours d’un séminaire mis en œuvre par l’équipe COSMO.

Title : Glucose regulating processes in a healthy and in a diabetic person modelled with the use of Petri Nets
Abstract
Diabetes is a chronic disease, classified as a disease of civilization, characterized by persistently high blood sugar levels. There is no doubt that more and more people will suffer from diabetes, which is why it is so important to better understand its biological foundations.
Insulin and glucagon are pancreatic hormones crucial for regulating energy metabolism and blood glucose concentration. They work in opposite ways – the role of insulin is to prevent hyperglycemia (too high blood sugar level), while glucagon prevents hypoglycemia (too low sugar level). A healthy person’s body automatically maintains normoglycemia (the proper level of blood sugar), while in a person with diabetes, this process is impaired (or does not work at all). Therefore, external mechanisms are necessary to achieve the proper level of blood sugar, in most cases – the administration of exogenous insulin.
During the presentation, a simple Petri net model of maintaining normoglycemia in a healthy person and a basic model of the processes occurring in the body of a person with diabetes will be presented. Comparison and analysis of both models allows for a better understanding of the mechanisms occurring in the (healthy and sick) human body.
In addition, models illustrating the production of insulin and glucagon in pancreatic cells, as well as the glucose regulating processes in the liver will be mentioned.
The presentation will end with conclusions and plans for the future.
