Project Description

ANR PROJECT eMC2: “Electric motorcycles and road safety“

Abstract

The excess risk for users of two-wheeled motorized vehicles (2MW) is still very high: the risk of being killed for a 2MW driver is 22 times higher than for a passenger car driver. Outside built-up areas, motorcyclists are killed on bends in 49% of cases.

When cornering, drivers alternate between taking short-term visual information to control their trajectory and anticipating hazards in the road environment. The complex dynamics of 2WD mean that any loss of stability associated with an emergency maneuver can lead to loss of control and an accident.

When drivers switch to electric 2WDs, road safety issues arise in terms of altered noise signature and vehicle dynamics. The absence of noise makes it more difficult to judge speed when approaching a bend, or more distracting to look at the speedometer, making trajectory control more complex. The dynamics of electric drives, which differ from those of internal combustion engines, with their high torque at low engine speeds, are problematic during re-acceleration out of bends and during low-speed maneuvers, such as starting off at a traffic light or performing a right-turn maneuver. In both cases, there’s a risk of losing grip and, therefore, trajectory. These factors are detrimental to road safety.

The eMC2 project proposes to fill in the gaps in our knowledge of the difficulties encountered by drivers of electric 2WDs, by comparing them with those encountered by users of internal combustion 2WDs. Based on the results obtained, the project aims to propose a set of accompanying measures for a “safe” switchover of drivers from thermal 2WDs to electric 2WDs.
